Description | |
Thomire & Cie and Louis Moinet, Extraordinary 3-piece clock set in Carrara marble and gilded bronze. Louis Moinet (Bourges 1768 - Paris 1853) was a watchmaker and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Louvre. He invented the "compteur de tierces," the first chronograph ever made. Moinet is renowned for his watchmaking treatise published in 1848, considered the most beautiful watchmaking book of its century, detailing the finest watchmaking techniques. Louis Moinet collaborated with Thomire on various clocks, generally large prestigious models. After the renowned sculptor and bronzier Pierre-Philippe Thomire retired in 1823, his son-in-law and grandchildren continued the business under the name Thomire & Cie. This richly crafted clock features a bronze centerpiece signed Thomire & Cie à Paris, with a blue dial signed Thomire et Cie and Ls Moinet Hr Paris. Each of the two candlesticks is adorned with three horn-blowing Tritons, each supporting a head of a hunting dog, a fox, and a deer. A marble and bronze pendulum can be found at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This piece is a work from Paris, circa 1850. |
