Description
Portrait painting: Surroundings of Frans Pourbus II (Antwerp 1569 - Paris 1622) and attributed to Justus Sustermans (Antwerp 1597 - Florence 1681). Oil on canvas. Joost Sustermans was a Flemish Baroque painter who studied with Frans Pourbus the Younger and collaborated with him in his studio at the Faubourg Saint Germain in Paris in the period 1616-1619. In 1621, Giusto Sustermans became a portraitist in the service of the Medici and painted the Florentine aristocracy, princes and servants, clergy, soldiers, scholars and members of the largest Italian families. This portrait of an aristocrat in armor probably represents Charles II Van Mantua, Duke of Mantua and Monferrato and member of the Italian princely family of the House of Gonzaga.
